Princess Phoebe Meets the Tudors by Sammy Winward

June 4th 2015 | Candy Jar Books | Paperbacks

Actress Sammy Winward is famous for her role as Katie Sugden in the ITV soap, Emmerdale. Since leaving, Sammy has been busy writing a book for children about a time-travelling princess, Phoebe, which is dedicated to her own real-life princess – her ten year- old daughter, Mia.

Sammy said: “It’s been a great journey on Emmerdale for the last fourteen years. But now I would like explore other things. I have always been passionate about history and, had I not pursued a career as an actress, my chosen destiny would have been a historian.

In Princess Phoebe Meets the Tudors, Sammy presents a historically accurate snapshot of Tudor princesses. With the success of films like Frozen in mind, Sammy has written the book to be accessible to younger readers. She continues: “All girls love Disney movies, but there is another side to being a princess. I have always worried that, particularly as young females, we are brought up on a rich diet of fairy tale princesses, whose single destiny seems to be that of meeting a handsome prince and living happily ever after. I have tried to do something very different, while still retaining the magic of these stories.”

The book presents female characters as strong and self aware. But Sammy’s exhilarating tales are also balanced with the awfulness of Tudor life. History tells us that Elizabeth I was locked away from most of childhood. How did this affect her? And what about Anne Boleyn, beheaded at the behest of Henry VIII? Sammy’s book magically divulges the secrets of these princesses, right up to the bitter end!

Sammy has always loved the stories of royal folk, but now feels the time is right for some historical accuracy. She continued: “My daughter is fascinated by tales of princesses and our house is steeped in history, dating back to the 1400s and was once inhabited by a character called Bertine d’Entwistle, who rode out with fifteen archers from the house to fight for Henry V at the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. I hope this book will encourage children to embrace history as much as I did when I was a child.”

Beautifully illustrated by Eric Heyman Princess Phoebe Meets the Tudors collects the stories of Anne Boleyn, Jane Grey, Mary I and Elizabeth I, and presents them in an accessible way for the twenty-first century readers. Along the way Phoebe discovers that female empowerment is not just a modern day phenomenon. As she travels through the fourth dimension she collects lessons from history on how to be a truly great princess.
